NFC payment trial to launch in SA

Near Field Communications (NFC)

Absa has sent out to invitations to an event scheduled to be held on Tuesday, 6 December 2011, to unveil a near field communications (NFC) payments trial programme.

It is understood that the trial will allow payments from NFC-enabled smartphones, though it isn’t clear which handsets or platforms will be supported initially.

According to the invitation, Absa will enable a “first of its kind” in mobile payments and the event will be “the official launch and demonstration of a capability that will change the way South Africans pay for goods and services.”

Among the smartphones with NFC support that are in circulation in South Africa, are the Nexus S, Nokia N9, BlackBerry Bold 9900, and the newly launched BlackBerry Curve 9360.

Considering how few devices support NFC in South Africa at the moment it will be interesting to hear Absa’s plans for the technology.
