Motorola launches world’s 1st enterprise tablet

Motorola has announced that it will be releasing the first enterprise tablet (ET) in the world. With it comes a bold promise of increased productivity.
The ET1 tablet, which retails at US$1 535 (approximately R12 280) boasts, rugged and specified features differentiating it from consumer tablets. The device also offers applications that can be customised according to the needs of the organisation which purchases it.
Motorola has been working with several independent software vendors (ISV) that have developed several apps for enterprises, such as assisted selling, mobile point of sale and item locators.
Max Stone, distribution and partners manager for the enterprise business at Motorola, says the ET1 tablet, is the world’s first tablet designed for business and enterprise usage. “This product gives businesses a range of possibilities to enhance productivity and increase customer satisfaction.”
Using several examples ranging from the retail purchase of a sofa to that of factory workers managing their stock, Stone says several organisations, particularly in the supply chain and healthcare environments, may benefit largely from this device.
Stone adds that staff and managers will have company information on hand to assist in making critical and instant decisions when assisting clients and customers and even patients in the healthcare industry.
“This device is designed for a knowledge worker – a person who needs access to multiple applications and needs to make enhanced decisions,” adds Stone.
The device which runs on an Android operating system, allows for multiple logins – ensuring that several staff members have access to various and sometimes selected information (based on company policy).
Managers – who will need access to various types of information – can also use the device to examine the number of staff available on duty and access e-mails via the manager’s dashboard, whilst floor staff can review the levels of available stock,” notes Stone.
The device boasts a Gorilla Glass 7 inch screen for added durability, with 1 Gig on board memory; a USB port, and will initially be available with Wi-Fi connectivity – 3G will be implemented on later products.
According to MD of Motorola South Africa Mark Kelly, the launch of this tablet is part of its initiative to “expand in Africa.”
“We will be investing heavily in Africa, as there are great growth opportunities on the continent. Our drive has not changes, we are still on track,” he said
But with this “first of its kind device” costing US$1 535 (approximately R12 280) its might be a hefty investment to make when other devices are available, that can be customised to suit your business through the creation of tailor-made apps.
