Last night (2 February 2012), Product of the Year (POY) announced the winners of its 2012 awards across a range of categories.
This year also saw the introduction of four new categories for the best cellphones in South Africa, joining the only other technology category for computer protection.
According to Product of the Year, they are the world’s largest consumer-voted award for product innovation. The awards were established 25 years ago in France and POY now operates in 33 countries worldwide.
In South Africa, Product of the Year says their results are based on a nationally representative consumer survey of 5,000 South Africans conducted in association with Nielsens.
Product of the Year accepts entries that are consumer goods which “demonstrate innovation and were launched within the previous year.” Entered products are then placed into specific categories such as food, beverages, personal care, and household care.
Winning products are announced in February of each year and receive the right to use the POY seal in marketing communications for one year.
The 2012 Product of the Year awards were sponsored by Vodacom.
