Free music in SA with the Samsung Galaxy Pocket
Samsung recently announced its latest entry-level Android smartphone, the Galaxy Pocket, along with educational apps and a free music service for the South African market.
At launch the device will include Samsung’s Education Hub, with the MobiMath application, as well as Music Hub which will offer free music downloads from local artists.
Education Hub covers the South African grade 10–12 curriculum, while Music Hub will be available in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria.
Craige Fleischer, head of the mobile communications business at Samsung SA, said that MobiMath is the first of other educational applications that will come to the Education Hub, and that Samsung are looking to roll it out to more African countries.
Music Hub is an outsourced service, Fleischer revealed, though it will be running under the Samsung banner.
Fleischer explained that the service will be supported by ad revenue and that it will be exclusive to the Galaxy Pocket for a period, after which it will make its way to other devices as well.
Asked about potential launch dates and pricing, Fleischer said that he wants to bring it in for under R1,000. There’s still much to be done before the device comes to SA however, and Fleischer said that the final price of the device will only be known later.
Samsung aims to launch the device by Q2 2012.
