FNB iPhone deal in the works
CEO of First National Bank (FNB), Michael Jordaan, said that they are working hard on offering the iPhone and other devices as part of its tablet PC and smartphone promotions.
“We’d love to do it,” Jordaan told journalists during the launch event of GeoPayments for its mobile application today (9 May 2012). Jordaan added that it comes down to existing commercial arrangements with network providers.
FNB Banking App statistics
Jordaan said that the app has attracted 160,000 users since launch and that they’re aiming for 250,000 users by the end of 2012.
He added that they were being conservative with the estimate and that he’s actually hoping to see around 300,000 FNB Banking app users.
According to Jordaan, the per-platform usage breakdown of their app is as follows:
- Apple: 49%
- BlackBerry: 28%
- Android: 21%
- Nokia: 2%
The Apple usage statistic raised the question of whether FNB had plans to offer the iPhone on its smartphone and tablet PC promotion.
When it first unveiled the deals, FNB said that part of their purpose was to promote the use of electronic banking channels such as the FNB Banking App launched earlier in 2011.
Farren Roper, FNB Connect head of products, later clarified that the 49% includes both iPhone and iPad usage, with an almost even split between the two devices.
FNB launched a tablet PC and smartphone promotion for clients with specific accounts in October 2011 and offers a variety of devices on 24-month payment plans.
These include Android smartphones and tablet PCs from HTC and Samsung, as well as the Apple iPad and MacBook Air.
