Huawei Ascend P1 gets SA launch date

Huawei announced last night (22 June 2012) that the Huawei Ascend P1 will be available in South Africa through Vodacom by July 7th, 2012.

Vodacom will have exclusivity on the device for a month, after which it should be available on MTN, Huawei said.

“We are sending strong signals of our intention to transform into a consumer-facing brand and extend our market leadership by strengthening our range of flagship products,” said Leo Wang, managing director of Huawei Devices for the Eastern & Southern Africa Region.

The device has the following technical specifications according to Huawei:

  • Dimensions: 7.69mm x 64.8mm x 129mm
  • 4.3-inch super AMOLED 960 x 540 touch screen with Corning® Gorilla® Glass
  • Dual-core 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4460 Cortext-A9 processor
  • 1GB RAM and 4GB ROM
  • SGX 540 graphic processor
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS
  • 1670mAh battery
  • 5.1 surround sound with Dolby Mobile 3.0 Plus
  • 8-megapixel BSI rear-facing camera with AF and Dual LED Flash, 1080p HD video capture, HDR effect optimisation
  • 1.3-megapixel HD front-facing camera, 720p video capture
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, supports UMTS 5 Bands 850/900/AWS/1900/2100MHz and GSM 4 Bands

Huawei also highlighted the following features:

  • MHL-HDMI connections
  • Dual microphone noise reduction
  • DLNA support

Asked about the price of the device, Huawei said that it would vary between countries but expect it to be priced at around R5,499 in South Africa at launch. Vodacom announced in a press statement today that the smartphone will be available on a 24 month Business Call contract at R279.00 per month.

“We are optimistic that the Ascend will be a popular choice among consumers and will contribute to our overall 2012 sales targets of 20 million smartphones in 2012,” a Huawei spokesperson told MyBroadband.
