Hands-on with Huawei’s new smartwatches, Pro tablet, and earbuds in Germany

Huawei unveiled five new devices at its Fashion Next Event in Berlin on 15 May 2025, and MyBroadband attended the occasion to get an early look at the products.

The star of the show was the Huawei Watch 5, a new premium smartwatch with advanced health and fitness tracking capabilities.

Its headlining feature is a Distributed Sensor Module that Huawei has dubbed X-tap.

Located on the right of the watch’s frame, the sensor allows users to take quick and accurate readings of health variables.

Due to its high concentration of vessels and thin skin layer, the fingertip is an ideal area for measuring various health variables, including blood oxygen levels and pulse rates.

It can function independently for quick, once-off checks or work in conjunction with the wrist-based sensor.

These sensors are supported by Huawei’s TruSense software, which is capable of measuring over 60 health variables across six major bodily systems.

While featuring improved health and fitness monitoring, the Watch 5 still offers impressive battery life, with 4.5 days in standard mode and 11 days in power-saving mode.

During our quick hands-on with the watch, we were particularly impressed with its lightweight and ergonomic design.

The latest model retains the circular design of the Watch 4, but the screen is slightly less raised.

It also comes with spherical sapphire glass for protection against scratches and impacts.

Huawei also displayed an assortment of compatible straps, which will appeal to a wide range of tastes.

I think the blue colour was the best, although some might prefer the more premium metal strap.

The Watch Fit 5 will be priced from R9,999 in South Africa when it arrives locally on 2 June 2025.

Below are some hands-on photos we took of the Huawei Watch 5.

The second major device announced was the Huawei Fit 4 Pro, a more affordable smartwatch that also features the TruSense health monitoring system.

It features a 1.82-inch AMOLED display with a 480 × 408 resolution, 347 pixels per inch, and 3,000-nit peka brightness.

The Fit 4 Pro’s rounded rectangular body is reminiscent of the Apple Watch. It weighs 30.4 grams but is slightly thinner at 9.3mm.

The cheaper base Huawei Fit 4 has a lower peak screen brightness of 2,000 nits versus and is slightly thicker at 9.5mm compared to 9.3mm.

It also lacks wireless charging support and comes with a different silicone band.

Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2-inch

Huawei’s latest premium tablet — the MatePad Pro 12.2-inch — features a tandem OLED display with two panels that work together to boost brightness.

I was impressed with the screen’s paper-like appearance, which seems like it would make it very comfortable to work on for prolonged periods.

The tablet also weighs just 508 grams and is 5.5mm thick, making it easy to carry and hold in one hand.

The included Huawei Glide keyboard’s buttons were large and well-spaced out, making typing pleasant, while the M-stylus reacted well to our gestures.

Huawei’s new flagship wireless earphones — the FreeBuds 6 — feature signficantly upgraded audio playback quality, jumping from 990kbps on the previous model to 2,300kbps.

The FreeBuds 6 boast dual magnetic drivers which also support high dynamic range — from deep base notes at 14Hz to screeching high treble at 48KHz.

While our etiquette on hygiene deterred us from trying on the earphones ourselves — unlike some of the other attendees — we can at least say that the droplet-style design looked fashionable.

The earphones were also very light and compact, suggesting Huawei’s claims of high comfort might hold true.
