iPhone 5 unveiled
Apple announced the latest addition to its popular iPhone range of smartphones at an event in San Francisco today.
The iPhone 5 boasts a thinner profile than the iPhone 4S, and at 7.6mm thick Apple claimed that new device is 18% thinner than its predecessor. At 112 grams is is also 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S.
Apple’s iPhone 5 features a larger 4-inch display running at a resolution of 1136×640, changing the aspect ratio of the display to 16:9.
Applications such as Keynote, Pages, Numbers, all take advantage of the new display, Apple said, adding that iPhoto, iMovie, and Garageband have been updated as well.
Mobile broadband technologies such as HSPA+, DC-HSDPA, and LTE have also been added.
The device will run on a new processor from Apple called the A6, with Apple saying that its CPU is twice as fast as the iPhone 4S and also offers twice the graphical performance.
Pages will launch 2.1x faster, you’ll be able to save images from photo app 1.7x faster, and load the music app with songs 1.9x faster, Apple said.
Improved camera, microphone, new connector
Although Apple didn’t announce a camera with higher megapixels (8MP, 3264×2448) for the iPhone 5, they did announce a number of improvements to the device’s main camera.
The new iPhone will include backside illumination, hybrid IR filter, five-element lens, f/2.4 aperture, dynamic low-light mode, precision lens alignment, and a sapphire crystal lens cover.
Apple said that the camera will include a feature called “smart filter” that will look at the image before the imaging signal processor does its noise reduction and determines which areas need uniform colour.
Photo capture is 40% faster with the new processor, Apple said, and the iPhone 5 camera will also boast a panorama mode.
According to Apple, much had changed since they first introduced the iPhone and it is time for a new connector.
Dubbed “Lightning” (in contrast to the “Thunderbolt” connector on Apple PCs), it boasts an all digital, 8-signal design; adaptive interface; improved durability; and can be plugged in with either side facing up (reversible).
Pricing and availability
The iPhone 5 will be available for the same price as the iPhone 4S was on contract: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for the 64GB model.
Pre-orders will open for the first phase of the launch on 14 September, with the device shipping on 21 September 2012.
It will then ships to more countries on the 28th, and to 100 countries across 240 carriers by December 2012, Apple announced.
