Nexus 7 now in SA
Google’s Nexus 7 tablet, which is built by Taiwanese manufacturer Asus, has been launched in South Africa, according to a press statement issued today (1 October 2012).
Asus only announced the 16GB model of the device for South Africa, adding that it has a recommended retail price of R2,999.
Platinum Micro, a distribution partner for Asus, previously told MyBroadband that they expect the Nexus 7 to be available in SA in the first or second week of October 2012.
It started shipping elsewhere in the world during July 2012.
Though Google launched Android 3.0 “Honeycomb” with the Motorola Xoom tablet, the Nexus 7 is the first tablet in Google’s Nexus line of devices and the lead device for Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean”.
According to Asus, the Nexus 7 was jointly developed by them and Google, and is the world’s first quad-core tablet in a 7-inch form-factor.
It features a 1280×800 IPS display protected under scratch-resistant Corning glass, an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, and is 10.5mm thick while weighing 340g.
