Monster-sized Samsung UHD TV gets monster SA price

Samsung 110-inch ultra HD TV with model

Samsung Electronics South Africa announced in a press statement today (9 May 2013) that it will be launching at the end of June 2013 its new 85-inch Ultra High Definition (UHD) Smart television, which they say offers four times the resolution of full HD (1080p). All of that high-res screen real-estate will cost a pretty penny – R385,000.

The Korean electronics giant announced the TV at CES in January 2013, showing it off in all its frame-mounted 85-inch glory.

“UHD delivers clear picture details with flawless images to make TV viewership as immersive as possible without actually climbing into the screen. The difference in quality in fact, is something very few have been able to witness on a television of this magnitude and is definitely something consumers need to see for themselves,” said Lance Berger, head of product marketing for TV/AV at Samsung SA.

Samsung announced the “special introductory price” of R385,000 on the UHD TV 85S9, which will be available for 85 days, ending on 24 July 2013.

The offer includes the following benefits, Samsung said:

  • A five year exclusive warranty;
  • free delivery; and
  • four years worth of hardware and software upgrades with the Samsung Smart Evolution Kit.

Samsung also said that all sales of this premium TV will include a pre-installation inspection at the customer’s home, where the Samsung service team will go through a checklist with you to “ensure that the installation and delivery process runs smoothly.”
