Sony 4K ultra-HD TVs: SA launch window

Smaller 55-inch and 65-inch models of Sony’s ultra high definition (UHD) television will be coming to South Africa in the second half of 2013.

This is according to Timothy Barnard, head of product marketing at Sony South Africa, who was speaking to a delegation of journalists at the Sony Conference for Africa which was held in Cape Town on 10 May 2013.

Currently Sony offers an 84-inch version of its UHD range in South Africa, though the international launch (21 April 2013) and prices of the new TVs were announced:

• $4,999.99 (±R45,500 at R9.10/$) for the Sony 55-inch Bravia XBR–55X900A; and
• $6,999.99 (±R63,700 at R9.10/$) for the 65-inch XBR–65X900A.

Barnard explained that they will only announce a recommended retail price for the new TVs closer to the time of launch.

Questioned more specifically, Barnard explained that under Sony Corporation they take out forward cover for the foreign currencies they use to purchase stock, and that this forward cover will be renewed before the local launch of the TVs.
