6 great Half-Life 2 mods

The Mod Database (Mod DB) is a great resource with a large collection of modifications for innumerable games. Half-Life 2 remains a favourite amongst modders, as evidenced by Mod DB’s list of nearly 800 Half-Life 2 mods.

MyGaming’s top 5 Half-Life 2 mods list was compiled using Mod DB’s top 100 webpage. We’ve pruned out the unreleased mods for your gaming pleasure, winding up with a good mixture of multiplayer, co-op, and single player mods. As a bonus, a sixth mod is listed – it’s a personal favourite that I feel deserves some coverage. Strap on your LAN boots, and dust off those Internet connections – it’s time to play some mods!

Obsidian Conflict view mod

Obsidian Conflict is a cooperative modification created for Half-Life 2. It is a community based mod with focus on fun, cooperative play, and physics-related puzzles. The mod has an open story, but is still set in the Half-Life 2 universe.

Obsidian Conflict allows players to cooperatively play all the way from Half-Life: Source to Half-Life 2: Episode 2. It also includes a large amount of new gameplay features and user-made cooperative maps. Among the features are new weapons, new NPCs, and a merchant NPC.

Riot Actview mod

Riot Act is a single player only mod for Half-Life 2. Gamers will take on the role of Jamil Lee, a member of the civilian resistance whom has been captured by the combine and imprisoned at Nova Prospekt. Will you meekly allow the combine to turn you into one of their kind, or will you fight back? I thought so. Time to start a riot!

D.I.P.R.I.P. view mod

From the team that would later go on to create Zombie Driver came D.I.P.R.I.P., a Half-Life 2 multiplayer total conversion. Gameplay is based on vehicle combat in various post-war environments. Vehicles use multiple weapon mounts which are activated by finding weapons scattered around the battle grounds. Players can upgrade their vehicles’ weapons and subsystems through the use of a ‘money for damage’ system.

The action takes place in varied post-war sceneries. Key places in the post-war world are areas rich in uncontaminated water and fuel. Most of the terrain has been left in an untouched state. Abandoned city centres, hypermarkets, refineries, country food storages, old military bases and other such places are the backdrop to raging battles.

Die in pain, rest in peace.

Get a Lifeview mod

In Get a Life gamers take on the role of Alexander Zemlinsky, a subway technician suffering from leukaemia. Unlike the protagonists in most games, Alex isn’t an invincible super-soldier. You wouldn’t call him normal either, because there is something in his past that connects him with the events that are about to unfold…

Get a Life features different environment settings presented in more than 24 maps, all of them connected to the scenario of the mod, filled with 61 NPCs and 13 weapons. All in all, there is about 11 hours of single player gaming pleasure in store.

GaL features a custom HUD, an innovative healing system with several damage zones, drugs that will trigger a “bullet-time” effect, upgradeable weapons and enhanced enemy AI.

Zombie Panic: Sourceview mod

Zombie Panic aims to create solid gameplay that is based on a classic zombie outbreak scenario. The living dead are coming for the last remaining humans, and these survivors must fight them off and live through the day.

Everyone joins a server, and one player is chosen as the seed zombie. The starter zombie’s goal is to grow the ranks of the undead by infecting human players. The humans can’t tell by the player list who’s alive and who’s not, eventually there will only be one survivor still standing if it all goes wrong.

The zombies only have a certain number of reinforcements (lives), when a zombie is killed they lose 1 life from their counter. However, when a human is killed they gain 1 life. If the zombies only have 1 respawn left, the humans can win the round by killing off the remaining undead left on the map. Happy zombie/human hunting.

Nightmare House 2view mod

As a bonus recommendation, Nightmare House 2 is a personal favourite. It hasn’t been out too long, so it hasn’t had a chance to climb up the Half-Life 2 mod rankings yet, but it’s certainly worthy of a top spot.

Nightmare House 2 is a single player, survival-horror themed mod. Players wake up inside an abandoned hospital with no understanding of how they came to be there. Only a vague memory of the girl from Nightmare House haunts you. Soon it will be difficult to differentiate between dream and reality. How long will it take you to realize that escape is not an option?
