No more pirated video games in 2 years
The founder of Chinese cracking forum 3DM has warned that there will be “no more pirate games to play” in 2 years time if anti-piracy technology continues to progress.
According to a report by TorrentFreak, the statement from 3DM comes after its cracking expert was brought to “breaking point” by the Denuvo security technology protecting Just Cause 3.
“While copying a title was a trivial process several years ago, in many cases more and more roadblocks are now being put in pirates’ way,” stated TorrentFreak.
The publication stated that while Just Cause 3 was released on 1 December 2015, as of 6 January 2016 it was yet to be cracked.
This was due to the strength of Denuvo’s encryption system.
“Many people have asked about cracks for Just Cause 3. The last stage is too difficult and Jun [cracking guy] nearly gave up, but last Wednesday I encouraged him to continue,” said 3DM forum founder Phoenix.
“I believe this game can be compromised. But according to current trends in the development of encryption technology, in two years time I’m afraid there will be no free games to play in the world.”
How much piracy costs the gaming industry
There is good reason for game publishers to spend time and money on security solutions like Denuvo’s – piracy costs them sales.
According to a 2015 report by Arxan Technologies, video game piracy cost the gaming industry $74 billion (R1.1 trillion) in 2014.
The company found 23,000 pirated games released during that year, and estimated that 31,000 pirated games were released in 2015. This is more than double the number of pirated games in 2012.
The $74 billion loss of revenue is more than that lost by the film industry to movie piracy, and more than TV and music piracy losses combined, stated the report.
