PlayStation 5 Pro and 30th Anniversary Edition prices in South Africa revealed

Gamefinity says the PlayStation 5 Pro console pre-orders will launch in South Africa on 1 November 2024. It will cost R19,499, and shipping will commence on 13 December.
However, it notes that the release date is subject to inbound supply chain dynamics and South African port and customs timelines. Therefore, they may change.
Gamefinity said the PlayStation 5 Pro will be available from various retailers like Amazon, BT Games, Computer Mania, FNB Connect, Game, Hirsch’s, Incredible, Koodoo.co.za, Makro, and Takealot.
Sony unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro in early September 2024, but South African fans are facing a longer wait than other markets.
Gamefinity earlier revealed that it was waiting for regulatory clearance for the consoles.
“We are awaiting certification from two regulatory compliance bodies. We are beholden to their timelines; however, we are confident that it will be this side of the year,” Gamefinity CEO Mario Dos Santos told MyBroadband.
It said the pre-order date announcement, which came today, would come once it had received an update from the two bodies.
The local markup due to importing and other fees for the PlayStation 5 Pro closely aligns with that of the standard PlayStation 5.
The PlayStation 5 Pro’s US price of $699 (excl. VAT) is roughly R12,300 at the current exchange rate.
The standard PlayStation 5 retails locally for R13,999, roughly 63% more than its $499 price in the US. Applying the same 63% margin to the PS 5 Pro’s $699 price would put it around R20,000 in South Africa.
The South African launch price for the PlayStation 5 Pro is roughly R500 lower than expected at R19,499.
It is important to note that US prices exclude sales taxes and the luxury goods duties South African Customs applies to electronic goods.
At the US launch, PlayStation’s lead architect, Mark Cerny, said the Pro edition enables games to be played at higher resolutions and faster frame rates without requiring users to switch between modes.
It also offers 45% faster rending than the standard console. While it doesn’t come with a disc drive, Sony says one will be sold separately.
A PlayStation blog post said the Pro model will improve the performance of older titles and that “several games will be patched with free software updates for gamers to take advantage of the PlayStation 5 Pro’s features”.
The titles include Hogwarts Legacy, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Spider-Man 2.
“Simply put, it’s the most powerful console we’ve ever built,” Cerny said.
Sony says the PlayStation 5 Pro features several other enhancements, including further improved ray tracing and AI-driven upscaling.
“We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console,” it said.
“We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.”
PlayStation 5 Digital 30th Anniversary Edition
The local distributor also revealed the PlayStation 5 Digital 30th Anniversary Edition pre-order prices, which will be available from 25 October 2024.
The console and accessories will launch on 27 November.
“Reminiscent of the very first PlayStation console to launch on 3 December 1994, this limited edition offering utilises the original PlayStation colour design and integrates it into the latest line of PS5 hardware products,” said Gamefinity.
The anniversary edition features colouring resembling the original PlayStation console and the original multi-coloured logo.
Several anniversary products are on offer, including a console bundle with a controller, a PlayStation Portal remote player, and DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers.
