Best console gaming deals in South Africa

South African gaming fans can get into the console gaming space for as little as R6,999 for a console offering decent performance in a variety of games, including first-person shooters, competitive shooters, survival, and action titles.

However, those willing to spend more money can buy powerful consoles capable of running titles at 4K resolution and up to 120 frames per second.

Pricing for a console capable of this performance starts at R11,499, depending on whether you prefer Sony’s PlayStation platform or Microsoft’s Xbox consoles.

Pricing for the PlayStation 5 starts at R11,499 in South Africa, while gamers must spend around R2,000 more to get the Xbox Series X.

Consoles offers players a more affordable means of gaming than forking out the money required to build or buy a PC capable of achieving similar performance.

While the current line of Microsoft and Sony consoles have been available for more than four years, they can still run modern triple-A titles with impressive performance.

Sony recently unveiled an upgraded version of the PlayStation 5 console — the PlayStation 5 Pro — in mid-2024.

It boasts several performance upgrades over the standard console and is aimed at the top end of the console gaming market.

South African console fans faced a long wait for the beefed-up console to arrive on South African shores. It became available for pre-order in November but only began shipping to customers in mid-December 2024.

The delays were due to local PlayStation distributor Gamefinity waiting for regulatory approval to import the consoles.

However, the distributor recently told MyBroadband that the console had been well-received in the South African market.

They are available locally from retailers like Hi-Fi Corp, Takealot, Koodoo, Computer Mania, and Game.

Some of the best deals on Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox X and S consoles are listed below.

Xbox Series S — from R6,999

Microsoft launched the Xbox Series S in November 2020 alongside the more powerful Series X.

The Xbox Series S effectively replaced the Xbox One S as Microsoft’s more affordable console. Offering 4 TFLOPS compared to the Series X’s 12 TFLOPS of graphics processing power, it is considerably less powerful than the flagship.

However, it is much more affordable. It launched in South Africa with a recommended retail price of R6,999.

The Xbox Series S can run games at a maximum 1440p resolution and up to 120 frames per second. However, some titles may require users to reduce resolution to achieve the maximum frame rate.

The standard Xbox Series S has 512GB of storage. However, Microsoft launched a Carbon Black edition in June 2023, offering 1TB of internal storage.

Our search found that the best price for the 512GB Xbox Series S is still its recommended retail price of R6,999, with several retailers offering it at this price and others selling it for slightly more.

The best price we found for the 1TB Black Edition Xbox Series S is R9,999.

PlayStation 5 — from R11,499

Sony’s launch of the PlayStation 5 occurred around the same time as Microsoft’s launch of the Xbox Series X and S in November 2020.

The Digital Edition console launched in South Africa with a recommended retail price of R9,999, while the Disc Edition PlayStation 5 launched for R11,999.

The PlayStation 5 provides 10.28TFLOPS of graphics processing power, thanks to its AMD RDNA2 GPU with 36 compute units clocked at 2.23GHz and its custom eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU clocked at 3.5GHz.

It packs 16GB of GDDR6 RAM and offers 825GB of usable SSD storage.

Since its launch, the console has received some updates and price adjustments. PlayStation 5 price hikes hit the South African market in August 2022 and again in July 2023.

Sony also subsequently launched a Slim Edition of the PlayStation 5 console. The best pricing we found for the standard PlayStation 5 family is as follows:

  • PlayStation 5 Slim — R11,499 (Game)
  • PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Edition — R12,088 (Amazon.co.za and Takealot)

Xbox Series X — from R13,499

Microsoft launched the Xbox Series X console in November 2020 alongside its more affordable counterpart, the Series S. At launch, it had a local recommended retail price of R11,999.

The Series X packs a custom AMD Radeon RNDA Navi GPU with an eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU. This combination enables it to run games at up to 4K resolution and 120 frames per second.

The console packs 1TB of storage and offers 12TFLOPS of graphics processing performance. It also features hardware-accelerated DirectX raytracing and introduced a new quick resume feature.

Backwards compatibility with older Xbox titles was a big focus of the development team when working on the Xbox Series X and S. They can play games from as far back as the original Xbox and the Xbox 360.

Microsoft lists a recommended retail price of R14,999 for the console. However, some retailers are selling it for substantially less.

The best price we found was R13,499 from Takealot.

PlayStation 5 Pro — from R18,999

Sony unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro in September 2024, promising an upgraded gaming experience over the standard console.

The beefed-up PlayStation can run games at faster frame rates and higher resolutions than the standard console without requiring users to switch modes.

It also boasts 45% faster rendering speeds.

Sony said the Pro console improves the performance of older games. Various titles have received or will receive free software patches for users to take advantage of these improvements.

Supported titles include Hogwarts Legacy, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Spider-Man 2.

Sony updated the PlayStation 5 Pro with more powerful ray tracing and introduced Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling mechanism that uses machine learning technology to sharpen image clarity.

It launched locally with a recommended retail price of R19,499 and most retailers are selling it at this price.

The lowest pricing we found for the PlayStation 5 Pro console is R18,999 through Makro. The deal is valid until 23 February 2025.
