South African Post Office (Sapo) acting group chief executive officer Mlu Mathonsi is resigning for “personal reasons”.

Sapo made the announcement on Monday morning. Mathonsi was also Sapo’s chief operating officer.

“He indicated his intentions to leave the SA Post Office, having joined in July 2014. I can confirm that his departure is amicable,” said Sapo board chairperson Dr Simo Lushaba in a statement.

Lushaba further said that Mathonsi has helped Sapo during its administration period. Sapo was put under administration in November 2014, after facing financial problems and a months-long strike that crippled services.

“The administration period was very intricate based on the fact that the SA Post Office faced real near implosion,” said Lushaba.

“Mathonsi made an immense contribution towards both the immediate stabilisation of the operations and the development of the Strategic Turnaround of the SA Post Office,” Lushaba added.

Sapo said it is focused on finding replacements for its COO and group CEO positions.

Mathonsi’s resignation also comes after former Sapo CEO Christopher Hlekane’s contract was terminated on September 1 2015, following allegations of mismanagement of funds.
