Biggest let-downs in SA tech for 2012
A panel of South African experts have listed the Department of Communications and ICASA, as well as the failed Telkom-KT deal as the biggest disappointments of 2012 in the local technology space.
The group of experts who weighed in with their opinion on the topic included the following newshounds and analyst:
- Rudolph Muller, founder and editor of MyBroadband
- Gareth Vorster, editor of BusinessTech
- Arthur Goldstuck, MD of research firm World Wide Worx and editor of Gadget.co.za
- Toby Shapshak, editor of Stuff, former columnist for the Times, and presenter of Tech on Tap
Panelists weren’t restricted to a set list to choose from and could name any area of technology or telecommunications they thought was particularly disappointing.

Muller said that the biggest let-down of 2012 was the Department of Communications (DoC) not making much progress in the handing out of spectrum to operators.
Goldstuck agreed with Muller and added that Cabinet canning the deal between Telkom and KT Corp was also a big disappointment.
Vorster quipped that he would say “Department of Communications” but that would mean that he had some kind of expectation from them to begin with. So instead he went with Telkom.
Shapshak said that he was disappointed with the continued bungling with Telkom, including the inexplicable rejection of the KT Corp offer and Communication Minister Dina Pule’s utterly bizarre behaviour over its board members. “Now that Pinky Moholi has gone, what hope is there for this essential national utility?”, Shapshak asked.
