New telecommunications and postal services ministry

President Jacob Zuma has announced the launch of a new Ministry of Telecommunications and Postal Services.

Zuma said that the new Ministry of Telecommunications and Postal Services is aimed at deriving more value out of the booming information and telecommunication industry and the postal services sector.

Siyabonga Cwele is the minister of the newly formed department of telecommunications and postal services. 

The deputy minister of telecommunications and postal services is Hlengiwe Mkhize. She was the former deputy minister of economic development.

Department of Communications changed

The department of communications has been changed to include more functions. This includes communications policy and strategy, information dissemination and publicity and South Africa’s international branding.

The new department of communications will be formed out of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa), the SABC, GCIS, Brand SA and the Media Development and Diversity Agency.

The new communications minister is Faith Muthambi. Stella Tembisa Ndabeni-Abrahams stays on as the deputy communications minister.
