Nkandla – R3.9m fire-pool, but no fire extinguishers

President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla home may have a R3.9 million fire-pool, but those in charge of fire safety at the residence failed to install a single fire extinguisher. This is according to a report in the City Press.

Not only were there zero fire extinguishers, but the majority of fire-hoses were not connected to a water supply.

The newspaper states that fire-protection inspectors from the City of uMhlathuze found:

  • Not a single fire extinguisher has been installed in any of Nkandla’s buildings
  • Only 2 out of 10 fire-hoses were connected to a water supply
  • There were only 2 fire hydrants on the property
  • There were no fire equipment signs posted anywhere

The report also states that the first time the fire-pool’s firefighting capacity was tested was in February – long after the pool came to the attention of the public.

The full report is available in the City Press of 31 May 2015.
