“Borderline porn” Afrikaans movie makers call for FPB review

Times Media Films, the distributor of the Afrikaans film “Dis ek, Anna” wants the Film and Publications Board (FPB) to review the 18LSV classification the movie was given.

The film is based on the fictionalised autobiographical novels Ek, Anna and Die Staat teen Anna Bruwer, by Anchien Troskie.

The movie was intended for teen viewing with the aim of “breaking the silence” around sex abuse.

Despite there being no frontal nudity or explicit sex scenes in the film, the FPB said the “overall impact of the film had a strong… psychological impact”.

“In early September, a new classification committee will watch the film and make its recommendations,” said Times Media Films.

“The whole point of the film is to expose the damage that sexual abuse causes. I think that it is important that this film be made accessible to 16-year-olds, because they are a vulnerable age group,” said Palama Productions’ Sara Blecher.

Dis ek, Anna opens at cinemas on 23 October 2015.
