SA police 10111 scanner in Western Cape broken since 2013

A scanner which tracks all emergency calls to the police’s 10111 call centre in the Western Cape has indeed not been working since 2013, police confirmed on Wednesday.

“It was uneconomical to replace this component alone,” national police spokesperson Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale told News24.

The province’s standing committee on community safety visited the call centre in Maitland last month.

Makgale said new equipment, including the scanner, was procured after the site inspection.

It was scheduled to be commissioned and finalised by the end of October.

“It must also be noted that a new voice recorder was procured and implemented in April 2014 and all calls are recorded,” he said.

DA provincial community safety spokesperson Mireille Wenger, who was part of the inspection, had last week voiced concern about the scanner.

She said the scanner was important because it monitored how many callers did not get through to an agent, and callers who chose to hang up.

“It is important to monitor so the police can try to improve call response times,” she told journalists at the time.

In her capacity as a DA representative, Wenger launched a campaign asking residents in the province to share their good and bad 10111 experiences.

She said she would then submit a report with the feedback to the provincial and national police commissioners.
