The Department of Home Affairs will go live with its online Smart ID card application portal in April 2016, according to a report by Htxt.
The report stated that a Home Affairs official said the portal will be up “when the new financial year has started”.
The Department of Home Affairs announced the launch of the pilot of its e-channel portal in December – allowing South Africans to apply for their Smart ID and passport online.
The e-channel portal allows users to make their application online, and then go into a Home Affairs office (and in future, a bank branch) to have their photo and fingerprints taken.
The system was originally set to be trialled with Standard Bank and FNB in November, but Home Affairs said it was still finalising “modalities” with the banks.
“As with Home Affairs’ previous Smart ID launches, the portal will only be available to select citizens, namely those who were born between 1981 and 1985,” stated Htxt.
