Parliamentary committee leader too “honest” for ANC communications policy

Chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio committee on communications Joyce Moloi-Moropa resigned this week, with the SACP telling the Sunday Times it recalled Moloi-Moropa due to political issues.

The SACP said it could not allow a situation where Moloi-Moropa implemented things contradicting ANC policy that came before the committee.

“There have been problems on broadcasting legislation, problems on the SABC. Wrong decisions taken,” the SACP said.

“She was actually recalled by us. We decided last year. She could not take it because she’s an honest person.”

News of Moloi-Moropa’s recall comes after she requested legal opinion on the Minister of Communications, Faith Muthambi, interfering in SABC board matters – leading to three board members being dismissed.

Moloi-Moropa said she would forward the opinion to Muthambi and ask her to appear before the committee to respond.

Should she fail to respond, the matter would be brought to the attention of President Jacob Zuma.

The full report is available in the Sunday Times of 28 February 2016.
