R1.9 billion for government broadband networks

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has announced that R1.9 billion of the national budget has been set aside over the medium term for broadband implementation in South Africa.

The funds are allocated to the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services to invest in high-speed Internet connections in public buildings and schools in eight National Health Insurance pilot districts.

He also said that to boost investment in the short term, one of several imperatives is to implement the transition from analogue to digital television.

This will release spectrum for broadband services, said Gordhan.
