Icasa – access denied

Icasa access denied

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) went on strike last week (28 October – 1 November 2013), with some staff still picketing on Monday, 4 November 2013.

That’s the word from a spokesperson for the regulator who said that many staff members were already back at their workstations.

News of the strike comes after Icasa previously said it was on a go-slow.

Industry stakeholders informed MyBroadband that they were denied entry into Icasa towards the end of last week, with guards telling them that staff were on strike.

However, some personnel were at their desks during the strike on a “go-slow” basis.

Asked whether the demands from staff were met, the Icasa spokesperson said that negotiations between management and the Communication Workers Union are ongoing.

According to the spokesperson, staff wanted Icasa to pay their performance bonuses by the end of October.

This has not happened yet, but the spokesperson said the matter is still being handled internally.

*Update: Icasa’s spokesperson has informed MyBroadband that the reference to their performance bonuses as “Christmas” bonuses was incorrect. The erroneous seasonal qualifier has been removed.
