SA government admits spy satellite project exists
As reported by Sunday Times (9 February 2014), auditor-general Kimi Makwetu is the first state official to break the silence around South Africa’s mysterious R1.2 billion spy satellite – Project Flute.
Replying to a request for information, Makwetu said that former defence minister Mosiuoa Lekota’s decision to withdraw approval for Project Flute resulted in a claim of over R115 million against the state.
This marks the first time a South African state official has acknowledged that Project Flute exists and admits a cost associated with it.
Sunday Times previously reported that the whereabouts are unknown of the R1.2-billion spy satellite commissioned by South Africa from Russian company NPO Mashinostroyenia.
