iPad prices in SA
Apple’s iPad has attracted considerable attention since it was officially unveiled in late January. The release of the device in the United States early this week also generated interest from consumers and media alike, so much so that Apple declared 300 000 units sold in the first day.
Although the company has revealed that the iPad will hit shelves internationally on the 24th of April, local Apple distributor Core have not yet confirmed if the same will apply to South Africa or how much the tablet PC will retail for.
As a result several local online retailers are now importing iPads for customers who would rather pay a premium price than wait for it to land on South African shores.
With this in mind MyBroadband has compiled a pricing comparison between two retailers known to be offering iPads to South African consumers.

Such purchases are known as ‘grey’ imports; meaning that they were not sold or brought into South Africa by the country’s official reseller – Core Group.
In response Core Group’s Executive Director RJ van Spaandonk warned that customers purchasing iPad devices from grey importers would not enjoy local support from Core and would be forced to rely on the grey importer for help in the event of a hardware failure. This is due to the terms of Apple’s international warranty agreement.
“At this point in time, no Apple Authorised Service Provider (not even Core Group) is authorised or equipped to service iPads. We cannot help, even if the customer were to have paid import duties, taxes, etc. and could prove it,” van Spaandonk concluded.
