The official distributor of Apple products in South Africa, Core Group, has announced the local launch and recommended retail prices of the new 12-inch MacBook.
Apple first unveiled the addition to its MacBook line of notebook computers in March 2015, and Core said it will be available for in-store preview at Apple Premium Resletters in South Africa from Friday (8 May 2015).
Selected Incredible Connection stores will also receive preview units soon.
Stock availability dates are still to be announced, Core said.
Apple introduced a number of new features with the MacBook 12-inch, such as a new keyboard and new trackpad design.
The usual scissor mechanism used in the Mac keyboard is replaced with a “butterfly” switch — a single-assembly switch with a stainless steel dome.
Keycaps on the new MacBook’s keyboard will also be larger.
The trackpad has also been replaced with a glass multi-touch surface that features the “taptic” technology used in the Apple Watch.
This allows you to click the trackpad anywhere, and not just the bottom half as previous MacBook trackpads did.
The new MacBook is 13.1mm at its thickest point, weighs 0.91kg (2lbs), and features a 2304×1440 12-inch Retina display.
It is also the first fanless MacBook, and will run on an Intel Core M processor which consumes a maximum of 5W of power.
The new MacBook features a single USB-C port on the left edge through which it charges, and offers USB 3.1 (5Gbps) and DisplayPort 1.2 connectivity.
Core said that the new MacBook will be available locally in all three colours (gray, silver, and gold) in the following configurations:
