Microsoft Surface Book – the ultimate laptop

Surface Book

Microsoft has made its entry into the laptop PC market with the Surface Book, a competitor to Apple’s MacBook range of devices.

It boasts a 13.5″ optically-bonded 267PPI display (3000×2000 resolution) in a magnesium case, with a screen that can detach from its base.

The base contains a Nvidia graphics accelerator, a full size backlit keyboard with keys that have 1.6mm of travel, a glass trackpad with 5 points of touch sensitivity, two USB 3.0 ports, an SD card slot, and a Mini Displayport connector.

Processing is taken care of by Intel’s new Core i5 and Core i7 Skylake CPUs with Intel HD graphics 520, with Microsoft stating that the device is the “fastest 13-inch laptop ever made” – twice as fast as the MacBook Pro.

It supports 8GB or 16GB of RAM, and 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage.

A fulcrum hinge connects the base to the screen, and Microsoft uses “muscle wire” for the mechanism to attach and detach the display.

The Surface Book’s battery will last 12 hours, added Microsoft.

Pre-orders for the device open on 7 October, and it will launch on 26 October starting at $1,499 in the United States.
