New MultiChoice HD decoder details
Multichoice is planning to launch their High Definition television (HD TV) offering in the middle of 2008, and details are emerging about the new decoder which will most likely be used.
Multichoice has confirmed that it has opted for the ‘PACE TDS850 HD PVR’ – a high definition satellite personal video recorder.
This device comes standard with H.264 compression and triple tuners. Dual DVB-S2 tuners enable the user to watch one channel while recording another or record two channels while watching stored content. The third tuner is DVB-S compliant to enable a dedicated push-VOD service and enhanced electronic programming guide (EPG).
Multichoice has however indicated that their HD decoder is a variant of the PACE TDS850 and will have 4 tuners and not 3.
The DSTV provider further said that while the TDS850 comes standard with a 250 GB hard disk drive (HDD), that the Multichoice version will most likely carry a higher HDD capacity. The 250 GB hard drive allows up to 60 hours of HD – or 120 hours of standard definition – content to be stored.
No launch date for the device has been announced yet, but Multichoice said that they are currently investigating and trialing the decoder.
