Garmin Live Traffic comes as a result of a partnership between Garmin Distribution Africa and Altech Netstar Traffic, a vehicle tracking company, which provides live traffic conditions to compatible Garmin Personal Navigation Devices (PNDs).
Dr. Chris Crozier, Chief Technology Officer of Garmin Distribution Africa, says that while bad traffic is a fact of life, with constantly-updated traffic information being fed to your navigation system, you can either avoid the worst of it by taking a detour or, if there is a major unavoidable delay, reschedule your trip.
“Information collected from cars fitted with Altech Netstar tracking devices, as well as Altech Netstar Traffic probe vehicles, is collected and turned into traffic information that is streamed over either FM broadcast or mobile data connections to Garmin and Garmap for Mobile users,” he says.
“The data is always current and up-to-date, and is displayed directly on the on-screen map with small icons used to symbolise traffic congestion, accidents or hazardous road conditions along your route.”
“From a lifestyle perspective, this service gives users the option to plan their trips a lot more efficiently, with additional journalistic information which details if the delay is as a result of an accident, hazard, or roadworks, how long the delay is and how far the tailback stretches.
“For many, this is indispensible information, if only to provide predictability on their chosen route,” Crozier adds.
Garmin’s Live Traffic is compatible with many in-car GPS units including most current generation (1000 series) nüvis, as well as the Garmin zümo 660 and 220 and certain older models including the Garmin nüvi 300 and 700 series running Garmap Africa Series 2009 3nd Edition or later map data.
A compatible traffic receiver which includes a 12 month Live Traffic subscription is required.
The Live Traffic service is also compatible with Garmap for Mobile on the Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Symbian platforms.
Garmin Live Traffic is available on the nüvi 1300T and 1200T as a pre-bundled solution that provides a fully featured Live Traffic offering in a single box that includes a traffic receiver and 12-month traffic subscription.
Annual renewal of the traffic subscription is available from the Garmap website for R299 per annum.
