ASUS Android tablets get SA launch dates

ASUS showcased a slew of Android tablets as well as a Windows-powered “slate” PC at CES last week.

The ASUS Eee Pad Slider, Transformer, and MEMO are set to run Android 3.0, codenamed “Honeycomb.” The Eee Slate will be getting Windows 7 Home Premium and a large 12.1” display.

Each of these devices sport slightly different features and, it turns out, different worldwide launch estimates.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer

Expected first, the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer has a 10.1” capacitive touch screen and will use the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.

According to ASUS it will also have an optional docking station which will turn the Transformer into a fully-fledged notebook with a QWERTY keyboard for desktop use, while extending battery life up to 16 hours.

It will have a 1.2 megapixel (MP) forward-facing camera and a 5MP camera on the back, as well as a mini-HDMI port for connection to an external display.

ASUSTek South Africa said that the Eee Pad Transformer is due for an April 2011 worldwide release.

ASUS Eee Pad Slider

The second Android tablet expected from ASUS this year is the Eee Pad Slider.

Similar to the Transformer, it is powered by the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and features a 1.2MP front and 5MP rear camera.

It also has a 10.1” touch-screen, but its display is set to receive In-plane switching (IPS) technology. The Slider also has optional on-board 3G.

According to ASUSTek South Africa the Eee Pad Slider is due out in May 2011 in South Africa and the rest of the world.

ASUS Eee Pad MeMO

Unlike its two brothers, the ASUS Eee Pad MeMO has a smaller 7.1” touch-screen.

In its press release, ASUS indicated that the device is aimed at those who want to slip an electronic note-taking device into their jacket pocket.

The Eee Pad MeMO even hearkens back to the good old days by featuring a stylus for taking handwritten notes.

Unlike the devices of yore, the MeMO features a Micro HDMI port for connection to an external display and, like its bigger brothers, is capable of 1080p HD video playback.

The ASUS Eee Pad MeMO is set for a June 2011 launch worldwide, ASUSTek South Africa said.

ASUS Eee Slate EP121

With three Android tablets set to launch in 2011, ASUS decided to balance it out by annoucning the Windows 7 based ASUS Eee Slate EP121.

It is powered by a Intel Core i5 processor and features a comparatively large 12.1” LED-backlit display.

According to ASUS the display is capable of a resolution of 1280×800 and a 178° viewing angle.

An on-screen keyboard is also complimented by support for an external Bluetooth keyboard for traditional desktop use.

The Eee Slate will be available with 32GB or 64GB of SSD storage (expandable via SDXC), and up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM. All models have 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, a 2-megapixel camera, and two USB 2.0 ports that provide full support for a wide range of standard PC peripherals.

It also features a mini-HDMI port that is ideal for connecting to external displays.

This large tablet computer is looking at a Q2 2011 release according to ASUSTek South Africa.

Pricing

Unfortunately ASUSTek South Africa couldn’t provide estimated pricing on their announced tablets, saying that they don’t really have any indication of pricing right now.
