USB-C will have native HDMI support

USB Type-C

HDMI Licensing has announced that a new version of the USB-C standard will have native support for HDMI, CNET reported.

Compatible smartphones, tablets, and laptops will be able to connect to a TV or display with a USB Type-C to HDMI cable without needing a converter.

Not all devices will support the new standard, called “HDMI Alt Mode”, and will have to be designed to output HDMI over USB-C ports.

The new standard is not backwards compatible and a software upgrade will not enable the functionality in existing devices.

HDMI Alt Mode supports up to HDMI 1.4b – supporting 4K, Audio Return Channel, 3D, HDMI Ethernet Channel, and Consumer Electronic Control.

It currently does not support HDR or 4K streaming that uses the HDMI 2.2 standard.
