IBM’s plan for first commercial quantum computer system

IBM building

IBM will build a commercial universal quantum computing system.

“IBM Q” quantum systems and services will be delivered via the IBM Cloud platform.

“Quantum computers will deliver solutions to important problems where patterns cannot be seen, because… the possibilities you need to explore to get to the answer are too enormous to be processed by classical computers,” said IBM.

The power of a quantum computer will be expressed by the “Quantum Volume”, which includes the number of qubits, quality of quantum operations, qubit connectivity, and parallelism.

IBM said it aims to construct commercial IBM Q systems with around 50 qubits in the next few years.

It also plans to collaborate with partners to develop applications that exploit the quantum systems.

IBM said future applications of quantum computing may include:

  • Drug and materials discovery
  • Supply chain and logistics
  • Financial services
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Cloud security
