Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Desktop 7000
Keyboards are funny things: whether you like them or not depends on your personal preferences. For me, Microsoft is clearly at the top of the pile and the latest keyboard and mouse set just adds to that legacy.
The keyboard is of the ergonomic variety, meaning that the keys are split so that they’re at the best angle for typing on – not necessarily so if you’re a one finger typist but if a touch typist they’re perfectly positioned.
To make life easier, there’s a plethora of buttons to access Windows functions more easily, including five customisable ones at the top of the keyboard. You can set them to launch your favourite application or perform a specific function. The design touch I really liked was that instead of clustering all the buttons together at the top of the keyboard, they’re reasonably spread out, with Microsoft clearly having thought about the best position for each function.
The part of the keyboard where your wrists rest is also padded and that makes it feel even easier to use.
When I first saw the accompanying mouse I was quite taken aback. Instead of the usual aerodynamic shaped pointing device we’re all used to, this one looks more like an ocean liner about to capsize. However, once I put my hand in the right position I understood that Microsoft had – while creating an interesting design – put function above the dictates of convention. I’m not sure that people with small hands would be saying the same thing but I felt right at home.
Some people may not like the design of the desktop 700 but for me it goes right on to my Christmas wish list.
