Most powerful supercomputers in the world
TOP500 has released its ranking of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, based on the Linpack benchmark.
The benchmark is a measure of a system’s computing power – how fast a computer solves “a dense n by n system of linear equations Ax = b”.
A good personal computer has a performance of around 100 gigaflops. The top supercomputers offer petaflops of computing power (1 petaflop = 1,000,000 gigaflops).
The Sunway TaihuLight, a system developed by China’s National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology and installed at the National Supercomputer Center, took top spot.
With a Linpack performance of 93 petaflops, TaihuLight is easily the most powerful number-cruncher on the planet.
The top 10 systems in the ranking are detailed below.
1. Sunway TaihuLight – 93 petaflops
A system developed by China’s National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology.
2. Tianhe-2 – 33.9 petaflops
A system developed by China’s National University of Defense Technology and deployed at the National Supercomputer Center.
3. Piz Daint – 19.6 petaflops
A Cray XC50 system installed at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre.
4. Titan – 19.6 petaflops
A Cray XK7 system installed at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
5. Sequoia – 17.2 petaflops
An IBM BlueGene/Q system installed at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
6. Cori – 14.0 petaflops
A Cray XC40 system housed at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center.
7. Oakforest-PACS – 13.6 petaflops
A Fujitsu PRIMERGY system running at Japan’s Joint Center for Advanced High Performance Computing.
8. Fujitsu’s K computer – 10.5 petaflops
Installed at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science.
9. Mira – 8.6 petaflops
An IBM BlueGene/Q system installed at the Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory.
10. Trinity – 8.1 petaflops
A Cray XC40 system running at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
