Sony unveils 330TB data tape storage

Sony has developed a magnetic tape storage technology with the industry’s highest recording areal density for tape storage media – 201Gb/in2 (gigabits per square inch).

The technology combines Sony’s magnetic tape technology employing lubricant with IBM Research’s new write/read heads, advanced servo control technologies, and signal-processing algorithms.

This supports storage of approximately 330TB per data cartridge, whereas conventional technology can only handle 15TB per cartridge.

Sony said that closing the spacing between the magnetic tape and magnetic head is critical to achieving high-density recording capabilities.

Reduced spacing entails increased friction at contact points between the tape surface and magnetic head.

However, friction must be reduced and the tape surface must run smoothly along the magnetic head to enable high-capacity writing and reading at a high speed.

This saw Sony develop a lubricant that is applied between the tape surface and magnetic head.

The lubricant reduces friction, and features a highly-durable bond with the tape.
