MediaTek launches impressive mid-tier smartphone chip
MediaTek has developed a new smartphone processor to compete with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip, built for mid-tier smartphones.
According to a Digital Trends report, the new MediaTek Dimensity 8300 makes Qualcomm’s upgrade in the Snapdragon 7 series seem visibly lazy.
The Dimensity 8300 is based on the same 4nm process as its predecessor and features ARM’s new V9-based Cortex cores.
This includes a 4+4 cluster of Cortex A715 cores and equal numbers of Cortex A510 cores.
MediaTek says the new components provide a 20% boost in processing power and a 30% improvement in energy efficiency.
Smartphone gamers should also be pleased with the new chip, as its Mali-G615 GPU offers a 60% bump in graphics processing power while being lighter on power consumption.
The chipmaker hasn’t shied away from the artificial intelligence (AI) race either. The Dimensity 8300 is one of the first mid-range chips that can run generational AI models with up to 10 billion parameters.
This matches the capabilities of Qualcomm’s top-tier smartphone chip — the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. MediaTek recently launched the Dimensity 9300 chip to compete with Qualcomm’s high-end processor, and it trumps the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip regarding its generational AI capabilities.
The Dimensity 8300’s AI capabilities come from its new APU 780 AI processor.
Benchmark tests have revealed that it is 3.3 times more powerful and can handle generative AI tasks eight times faster.
The new MediaTek chip features an improved RAM module that can handle the higher frequency 8,300 MB/s channel, compared to the 6,400MB/s in earlier chips.
The first wave of phones powered by the Dimensity 8300 should arrive by the end of 2023.
