Takealot beats Makro with lower tech prices

PriceCheck’s tech pricing comparison revealed that Takealot offers better prices than Makro on a basket of technology products.
PriceCheck has been a trusted consumer e-commerce platform since 2006 and is a leader in retail data intelligence in South Africa.
The company, founded by Kevin Tucker in 2006, has extensive data on product prices dating back years.
It used this intelligence to create a technology product basket of sixteen widely used items that most South Africans will buy every few years.
For this comparison, MyBroadband selected the pricing of South Africa’s largest technology retailers — Takealot and Makro.
Takealot, founded in 2011 by Kim Reid and Willem van Biljon, is an online store with physical pick-up points across South Africa.
Takealot dominates South Africa’s eCommerce market thanks to its wide product range, excellent logistics network, and high service levels.
Makro opened its first South African store in Germiston in 1971 and has a brick-and-mortar and online presence.
Its online shopping service levels have been erratic over the last few years, something the company is actively addressing.
Makro and Takealot are fierce competitors and are battling for market share in South Africa’s retail sector.
It raises the question of which company offers the best prices on technology products to consumers.
PriceCheck created a technology basket with a range of products that compares the price of products from different retailers.
The basket includes an Acer laptop, Nintendo Switch, Samsung TV, PlayStation 5, Samsung Microwave, a hard drive, and Sony earbuds.
It also has an Acer laptop, Samsung gaming monitor, Apple TV, Apple HomePod mini, an Air fryer, Galaxy Watch, GoPro Hero 13, JBL Speaker, and a Samsung smartphone.
The pricing comparison revealed that Takealot has better average prices on technology products than Makro.
Makro is more expensive on ten of the sixteen items, while Takealot is more expensive on three. There were three items which cost the same.
The table below, courtesy of PriceCheck, shows how Takealot and Makro’s prices compare on the basket of products.
