World’s first triple-GPU laptop
Toshiba has officially launched the world’s first laptop to feature three onboard graphics processors.
The high-end gaming laptop will use two Nvidia 9800M GTS GPUs and one integrated 9400M GPU. The user will have a choice between using the 9800s in SLI (scalable link interface) mode for gaming, or the 9400 on its own for quieter, cooler and more energy-efficient performance.
While not offering three-way SLI, the dual 9800 performance should be on par with Alienware’s first ever ATi Crossfire powered M17, if not faster.
The triple-core Qosmio laptops will be available in two varieties, the X305-Q706 and X305-Q707. The Q706 retails for $2 000 (R20 400.00) while the Q708 retails for $4200 (R43 000). Both laptops feature 4GB of DDR3 1066MHz SDRAM, and both feature identical graphics card setups.
The main difference between the two is that the Q708 will feature an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300, whereas the 706 sports a regular Core 2 Duo P8400.
Both laptops will feature a standard 320GB hard drive, with the 708 adding an additional 128GB solid state drive.
The laptops both feature a 17-inch LCD display set against an eye catching red on black gloss finish. At over 4kgs, the Qosmio X305 is hardly going to compete with the likes of MSI’s Wind for portability but will cater for a more performance hungry user.
When using the 9800M SLI configuration the battery life can be expected to vaporise, so luckily the laptops feature the more discreet option to use the single 9400M for less intensive operations.
Local release information was not available at time of publication. However, Toshiba have made their previous high end Qosmio X300 available locally, so we can assume they will do the same with the X305.
