The solution is an iPod docking station. Logitech’s Pure-Fi Express Plus is one of literally hundreds of mini speaker boxes that – combined with an iPod – is the modern equivalent of a boombox.
They range from high-fidelity systems that will put you back thousands from niche suppliers, such as Fatman, to plastic portables that go for a few hundred from no-name Chinese manufacturers. The Pure-Fi Express Plus is positioned somewhere in the middle of the market.
The speaker dock’s outstanding feature is Logitech’s omni-directional technology, which means that if you put the speakers in the middle of the room sound is beamed in all directions – a big plus if you have to fill a room of partygoers or keep everyone in the loop at a braai.
The size of a loaf of bread – and weighing not much more – the Pure-Fi Express Plus is made to be portable. It can run on AC or battery power (although it doesn’t take long to burn through the Evereadys) and includes a carrying handle. There aren’t too many buttons to confuse things and out of the box operation is within seconds.
The new Logitech dock also features a wireless remote control with a range of up to 10m. The remote control lets you instantly adjust volume, play, pause, fast-forward and rewind, plus offering Shuffle and Repeat buttons. Priced at R999, you shouldn’t expect concert hall acoustics. But to relay the sound quality of your average MP3 it can’t be faulted.
