Plasma TVs get the axe

The DailyMail reports that plasma screen TV sets are known to use up to four times more electricity and produce four times more carbon dioxide than traditional cathode ray tube (CRT) sets.

If the movement is successful, the EU aims to have the sale of power hungry plasma screens phased out in the region by spring.

It’s not just the plasma screen that is getting the axe, but there are a number of other household appliances that have been identified as using excessive amounts of electricity, such as the 100W light bulb which is also facing extinction in the EU.

A statement issued by the EU’s department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs indicates that while most plasma set sales will be discontinued in the region, LCD TVs will remain in stores as they are far more energy efficient.

Furthermore, there are certain plasma sets that are relatively “eco-friendly” and will remain on the market.
