Intel may cut prices
Top Investment bank Pacific Crest has said that Intel plans to introduce significant price cuts across its product range.
Bank analyst Michael McConnell sees Intel cutting prices on its quad-core range by about 15%, dual-core by 13% and the Xeon server range by between 15% and 40%.
According to MCConnel, the heaviest cuts are set to come in at the server level where AMD’s performance is far more competitive than in the consumer space.
The consumer range of quad-core and dual-core CPUs could also do with a price cut, especially following the release of AMD’s Phenom II which is not as powerful but offers better value for money than Intel’s new i7.
McConnell also stated that the price cuts would be announced on January 18.
Currently a Phenom II Black Edition CPU costs just $275 in the USA. Locally it is priced at around R4 200, making it significantly over-priced. If Intel price cuts do happen in the USA, it will remain to be seen whether they trickle down to South African consumers, or if the difference vanishes into the vacuous abyss that is the South African technology distribution network.
The report is purely speculative, and Intel refused to comment on any furture plans regarding their CPU pricing.
