AMD launches its fastest ever CPU

AMD today officially announced the most recent addition to its Phenom II range in the X4 965 Black Edition.

The processor, which now claims the premier position in the Phenom II range as the highest clocked AMD CPU, offers an update to the Dragon platform and runs at a stock frequency of 3.4GHz and includes support for DDR3 and AMD OverDrive 3.0.

Although the processor is identical to its forerunner, the X4 955 Black Edition, in that both are based on AMD’s 45nm manufacture process, the 965 pulls ahead by 0.2GHz in terms of clock speed.

This makes it the highest clocked AMD CPU to date.

The only other defining factor that sets the 965 apart from the 955 is that it offers a higher TDP of 140W.

AMD has also revealed that the 965 will offer DirectX 11 support for its incoming line of updated graphics processors.

An official announcement regarding local availability or pricing has yet to be made. The suggested international retail price for the 965 is $245 (R1 960).
