Hetzner announced today that construction has started for its new data centre in Samrand, Gauteng, and that they expect to commission it later in the year (2013).

The hosting company also announced that it has dropped the traffic over-usage costs on all its products, as follows:

  • All Web Hosting packages: from R15.00/GB to R7.00/GB;
  • Managed Dedicated and TruServ servers: from R7.00/GB to R3.20/GB; and
  • The reseller Volume Plan: from R10.00/GB to R5/GB

According to Hetzner, its new data centre will have a hosting capacity of 1,200m², which lets it house over 12,000 servers.

The new facility is the first of five data centres under construction in what Hetzner said will become a Data Centre Park, modelling the building design and data centre efficiencies off of Hetzner Online’s German facilities.

Marketing and communications manager for Hetzner, Athena Turner, said that the designs include reducing their dependency on power intensive air-conditioning.

“Whenever the ambient temperature allows for it, we will make use of direct free cooling which reduces power consumption significantly,” Turner said.

“This has been a long term project that we’ve been preparing for,“ Turner added. ”Sourcing the right location for our facility was paramount.”

In building their new data centre in Samrand, Turner explained that multi-homing has been made a reality for Hetzner.

“Through negotiations with various upstream network providers to find the most suitable connectivity options that will benefit our customers and our growing business requirement, we can confirm that AfricaINX and Internet Solutions will function as our primary bandwidth providers,” Turner said. “This will significantly increase Hetzner’s network resilience.”

Turner explained that while they chose Gauteng as the location for Hetzner’s first Data Centre Park, their Cape Town customers already benefit from their recently retrofitted data centre at Great Westerford in Newlands which has adopted many of the same engineering principles.
