Hetzner hosting uncapped
In a newsletter sent to its customers on Monday, 17 March 2014, Hetzner announced that it no longer imposes traffic quotas on its hosting packages.
The hosting provider said that this does not mean that there are no limitations to the activities of its users’ sites, as physical hardware limitations may come into play for a small portion of users (about 0.05% of their customer base).
“Thanks to an ever decreasing cost, [traffic] is no longer the first point of constraint, and therefore no longer metered,” Hetzner said.
Although traffic is not metered, Hetzner said that its acceptable use policy (AUP) still applies to shared hosting clients. The AUP now specifically mentions web hosting traffic usage as follows:
9.1 Our Web Hosting packages do not have a set quota on the data transfer (traffic) provided as we’d like our customers to have the resources needed to offer a viable, growing online presence. However, it is expected that all customers comply with this Acceptable Use Policy, designed to preserve Hetzner’s server and network performance for the benefit of all our customers. Our Web Hosting packages are not suited to support the sustained demand of large enterprises; in such cases a dedicated server would be more appropriate.
9.2 Using a Web Hosting package primarily for online file storage or archiving electronic files is not permitted.
9.3 Streaming excessive video or hosting music on a Web Hosting package is prohibited.
Should a website hosted on a shared server dominate the server or network resources to the extent that it compromises the performance of its co-existing websites, Hetzner said it would contact the user to discuss alternative options.
In general, Hetzner said that the small percentage of customers with higher demands should opt for a dedicated server.
