Caxton buys stake in start-up Guzzle Media

Listed media group Caxton & CTP Publishers & Printers has purchased a 50 percent stake in Guzzle Media, the leading catalogue promotion’s aggregator and retail catalogue technology company in South Africa.

“The acquisition represents a huge opportunity for Guzzle Media and we are very excited to be joining the Caxton Group,” says managing director Ric Meulemans.

“The partnership makes perfect sense, with Caxton being the leading printer and publisher (carrier) of printed catalogues and Guzzle being the leading publisher of digital catalogues.

“So many consumers are reading news or doing research digitally these days, Guzzle gives retailers another opportunity to reach their target market, as most consumers, still research online before going in-store to purchase.”

Founded in September 2011, Guzzle became a popular destination for South African bargain hunters, attracting 7 million site visitors in 2015 and serving over 100 million pages to these visitors. Meulemans will remain as managing director, along with co-founder Oliver Bryant as CTO.

Guzzle has teamed up with Spark Media, Caxton’s newly formed media sales powerhouse, who will now be managing all media sales on Guzzle the publisher.

Together we have developed RAN “Retail Advertising Network”, using the Guzzle API technology.

“This investment has allowed Spark Media the ability to now distribute retail catalogues digitally, just like we do in our Local Newspapers,” says Marc du Plessis, Commercial Director at Spark Media.

“We have an ever growing network of catalogue aggregator sites and publishing sites that offer large audience to complement our massive Local Newspaper reach.

“We already have guzzle.co.za, dealfinder.co.za, mybroadband.co.za, and to come, all of Caxton’s publishing sites known as the Local News Network which include the likes of sandtonchronicle.co.za.

Spark Media is very excited about this potentially game changing opportunity for retailers. We will grow this network way north of 15m users very soon.”
