New Synology DiskStation DS916+ NAS server – an all-in-one storage solution for SMBs

The Synology DiskStation DS916+ NAS server provides an ideal private cloud solution for your business, both protecting your data and maximising your productivity.

A full-featured 4-drive-bay network attached storage solution optimised for intensive tasks, it is specifically designed for small and medium-sized business users and IT enthusiasts who care about high performance throughput and safety for data sharing and backup.

But DS916+ is much more than just a powerful storage, offering in addition 4K transcoding capability, expandability, and a next-generation Btrfs file system.

Powered by an Intel Pentium N3710 quad-core processor with AES-NI hardware encryption engine, DS916+ provides data encryption acceleration along with great performance.

It has scalable drive management of up to 9 drives (up to 72TB by adding expansion unit) and offers real-time transcoding of 4K Ultra HD source contents.

DS916+ comes with 2GB or 8GB memory options, making it more flexible for multitasking applications, and is backed with Synology’s 3-year limited warranty.

It also introduces the next-generation Btrfs file system, offering businesses a built-in data integrity check and a flexible shared folder/user quota system.

What really sets DS916+ apart is the intuitive DSM 6.0 software, which looks a lot like a typical desktop –with icons, a taskbar and even a wallpaper image.

The browser-based user interface enables you to access and manage your files on any popular platform, such as Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.

Besides using the DS916+ as a regular networked drive or file server, DSM 6.0 has about 100 apps available on its Package Center, which can turn the NAS into an all-in-one server as well as a multi-functional private cloud for SMBs.

Email & Productivity Tools

DSM 6.0 offers you a secure, private cloud mail service with MailPlus package, giving you control over your data privacy.

MailPlus Server comes with a high availability design that minimizes service downtime in case of any network or hardware failure.

At the same time, MailPlus web client and mobile app give employees a sleek, easy-to-use interface to send, receive, and organize e-mails in ways that can increase their productivity.

Together, they ensure your company’s communications are smooth, protected, and available all the time on any device – even while your employees are on the road or out of office.

The Spreadsheet package allows you to create, edit, and collaborate on spreadsheets with other people and save your documents in DS916+.

Whether you’re calculating prices for a customer or keeping track of household expenses, this makes it much easier to collect and organize data.

Revision history lets you see who modified a spreadsheet and at what time, and if there’s a problem or accident, you can restore the spreadsheet to a previous version.

Most people switch between multiple devices every day, and Cloud Station allows you to synchronize data across all your devices, such as computers, mobile devices or DS916+.

Utilizing the massive storage space of DS916+, you can build a private cloud for everyone in your company, without having to pay monthly fees to providers like Dropbox or Google Drive.

Backup & Disaster Recovery

DSM 6.0 also provides several tiers of backup strategies that eliminate the risk of data loss for businesses.

Compatible with Windows Backup, Apple Time Machine, and a wide range of third-party backup software, IT administrators can flexibly allocate storage space to let all employees back up their computer to DS916+.

Another option is the new Synology Cloud Station Backup, which makes “real-time” backup possible. As soon as a file is modified or created, it will be backed up to DS916+ immediately. Up to 32 versions are retained for each file.

To protect the data and virtual machines running on DS916+, DSM 6.0 introduces Snapshot Replication. It allows you to take snapshots of your shared folders and iSCSI LUNs as frequently as every 5 minutes, with minimal impact on system performance.

When an end user accidentally deleted or overwrote a file, he will be able to restore it from previous versions directly in the Windows File Explorer, without having to ask IT administrators to come to the rescue.

Application-consistent snapshots also ensures virtual machine data and status consistency under VMware or Hyper-V environment.

In addition, you can replicate snapshots to offsite Synology NAS servers, so that even if a disaster strikes, you can still restore snapshot-protected data within a very short period of time.

This approach is particularly suitable for businesses that have higher requirements for RPO and RTO.

For data that are less frequently modified or for long-term archiving purpose, the Synology Hyper Backup package can schedule multi-version backups to all types of destinations: external hard drives, other Synology NAS servers, rsync servers, or public clouds.

With block-level incremental backup and cross-version deduplication, it minimizes the storage required for backing up data in multiple versions.

Using File Station in DSM 6.0 or the Hyper Backup Explorer tool available on Windows and Linux, you can easily browse what is inside each version, and choose to restore even just a single file.

You can also encrypt files before transmitting them to a backup target and also back up files from encrypted shared folders.
