Do developers really add value?

Of course developers add value. What kind of a question is that? Do we really need to defend our place in the business? No, not really.

Our place is secured firmly within the world of technology and won’t change unless there is an actual zombie apocalypse that forces us into defending humanity with our cunning wit, intelligence and mechanical keyboards.

So maybe the question should rather be “how do we as developers add value?”

Developers add value by being proactive problem solvers and critical thinkers

We have all had this brief for a weird and funky requirement or feature.

Thankfully, the developer always asks why? Why do we need this? How should this work? What happens after that? How would the user initiate this? What platforms is it going to work on? Etc.

Developers think about what they are going to do and ask as many questions as possible to determine the difficulty and scope of the project.

Developers add value by implementing “metrics” to measure everything

Devi, techie, dudie…do you know how many times the customers click on the big flashy add to shopping cart button?

Is it possible to see if the person is going to the checkout and what time of day the customer uses our application?

Can we see if people from country X, Y and Z is using our website and on what device?

Developers can always answer “Yes” because we have already thought about that in advance.

We make sure to add the necessary code to measure that which is important to measure.

Developers add value by automating repetitive tasks

automate

Developers are one of the most valuable and expensive resources in your business and we know that.

Therefore, we try to automate as many tasks as possible so that we won’t have to go and rewrite it, thereby wasting precious time and maybe making a typo which wastes hours of debugging just to find out that it’s caused by a missing semicolon or forgetting to close the function.

By automating tasks, developers become more efficient and productive and have more time to spend on what is important.

Developers add value by writing maintainable and pure code

As developers we know and understand the pain and frustration when having to take over another person’s work and try to make sense of their complex, untidy and uncommented code.

It’s like re-enacting the movie the Maze Runner.

Great developers add value and save time by writing clean, maintainable and modular code.

Developers add value by working best within an agile and lean methodology

agile

Experienced developers understand that agile and lean projects are faster, produce better quality code and lowers risk tremendously with small incremental releases and the flexibility to respond to change.

Features are delivered faster due to the iterative nature of agile development.

Developers add value by constantly learning and exploring

learning-and-exploring

Developers understand that for a software product, website or application to improve, they have to evolve, explore and improve on their own skill and knowledge.

Good developers know that constant learning and having the willingness to try something new is key to personal and business growth.
