There are many ways to enjoy Showmax, from using a smart TV to a mobile phone or tablet – or even a gaming console.
A Showmax subscription allows users to watch a wide variety of local and international movies and series on two devices at the same time, and users can register up to five devices to watch on.
An overview of all the devices Showmax is available on is provided below.
Smartphones and tablets
Showmax is available on Apple and Android smartphones and tablets via the Showmax app.
The mobile app allows users to stream content while connected to the internet, or to download up to 25 different shows to watch offline.
Laptops and computers
Showmax is also available on all laptops and computers, as users can stream movies and series on-demand through their web browsers.
Laptops can be connected to regular TVs with an HDMI cable to enjoy in-browser streaming on a bigger screen, or for those without a smart TV.
The browser version of Showmax does not allow users to download shows to watch offline.
Google Chromecast, Telkom LIT and Apple TV
Using an Apple TV, a Chromecast, or an Android TV media player, users can “cast” or stream Showmax onto a TV. This includes Telkom’s LIT box, which is an Android media player that connects to your TV and lets you stream from applications like Showmax, DStv Now and YouTube.
Connecting to the internet over a Wi-Fi connection, and to the TV through an HDMI cable, these devices connect regular TVs to the internet.
Users with a connected DStv Explora can stream Showmax content onto their TVs.
To access Showmax on an Explora, the decoder needs to be connected to the internet, then subscribers need to press the blue DStv button on the remote, scroll to Watch Now, and select Showmax.
DStv Premium subscribers can watch Showmax for free, while DStv Compact or Compact Plus subscribers pay only R49 per month for the service. A subscription is normally priced at R99 per month.
Xbox One and PlayStation gaming consoles
Showmax has also launched apps for the Xbox One and the PS4, allowing users to watch Showmax on their TVs through their gaming consoles.
Through the app, consoles connected to the internet can stream on-demand shows in a few easy steps, with no need to buy new equipment.
The PS4 app is currently only available in South Africa.
The Showmax app can be downloaded onto supported Smart TVs, and comes pre-installed on all new supported models of Hisense TVs.
From there, it’s as simple as opening the app and streaming the content you want – just as you would on your mobile device or laptop.
The smart TVs that support the Showmax app include:
- Samsung Smart TVs (2012 and later)
- Tizen Smart TVs (2015 and later)
- LG NetCast Smart TVs (2012 to 2014)
- LG WebOS Smart TVs (2014 and later)
- Hisense Vidaa 2.0 Smart TV (2016 and later, South Africa only)
- Android TVs (e.g. Sony, Philips, Sharp)
